The FDA says taking the wrong drug or wrong dose sends 4 million people to the emergency room each year.
The ideas to improve safety include easy-to-read drug labels, special cups for cold medicines, and plans to reduce the misuse of drugs.
Painkillers are a problem. The FDA is ordering makers of morphine, codeine and methadone to make these drugs safer for people to use.
Another problem is liver damage caused by acetaminophen. That is the active ingredient in Tylenol and other over-the-counter pain relievers.
The FDA plan is called “Safe Use.”
