The Difference Between Futbol and Football

September 28, 2014
Plain English Version

futbol-footballAs summer turns into autumn, it is time for America’s favorite sport. This sport is not baseball or basketball, but football. American football is very different from European futbol.

Futbol is often called soccer.

Football is played on a similar field, but the field is narrower. Like futbol, football is played with 11 men on each team. Each team tries to go into the other team’s territory. To score in football, a player must run into the “end zone.” It is located at the end of the field. In futbol, a ball must be put into the other team’s net.

There are many more differences than similarities. In football, a team has 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players. They do not play together. One team’s offense plays against the other team’s defense. In futbol, some players are responsible for both offense and defense.

There are many ways to score in football. The two most common ways are the field goal and the touchdown. A field goal is scored by kicking the ball through two metal poles located at the end of the field. It is worth three points. A touchdown is most common. A touchdown is worth six points, and a team can gain another by kicking the ball through the metal poles from a short distance.

College football is a huge American pastime.

America and Canada are currently the only countries with professional football leagues. The rules are a little different in Canada.

In the U.S., there are 32 teams in the National Football League. These teams are split up into two conferences of 16 teams. The 16 teams are split into four divisions. The winner of each conference plays in the Super Bowl, which is the championship of football. This game is the most-watched game on television each year.

Experts say the best teams this year are the Denver Broncos, the New England Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Be sure to watch Super Bowl XLIX from Phoenix, Arizona on February 1, 2015.
