Donald Trump’s election is a shock. We do not know what it means for the future.

For example, the president nominates the Justices of the Supreme Court. The Senate confirms the choice, or does not. The next Senate will be Republican controlled. Mr. Trump promised that he would appoint conservatives to the court. This puts the future of:

  • The undocumented
  • A woman’s right to choose
  • Marriage equality
  • Justice for minorities

all at risk.

Electoral map.

Electoral map. Arizona went red.

There are two Americas.  Many of the people who elected Trump are white. Many are low-income earners. Many lack a good education. Many lack job opportunities. Most of all, many Trump voters said it was time someone paid attention to them. It turned out they were a majority of the country’s voters.

Many well-off Americans did not notice this other America.

Here is America today. People in the heartland of the country and the South are white and conservative. People on the coasts and in some Mid-Western states are more liberal and have more education. They include more minority groups. There is a clear divide between the two parts of the country.

Now, with the election of Donald Trump, the white, right wing is in charge.

An observer once said any president would find that the White House is a place of confinement. In spite of that, President Obama pushed through the Affordable Care Act. He pushed though an order that created the Dreamers. But he failed on many other fronts.

The larger point is that President Trump also will not be able to do all that he said he wants to do.

The experts were wrong about this election. Going forward, the politics of America will be different. We urge all to pay attention.
