Immigrants Taking Jobs From Americans – at Disneyland!

Plain English Version

disneyland

Nobody thought Team Mickey Mouse would replace Americans with foreign workers just to save money. It seems like that is what they are doing. Many people are not happy about it.

It is about H-1B visas. These visas allow American companies to bring in skilled foreign workers. The law says H-1B visas are to be used when skilled Americans cannot be found to fill the jobs.

Only 85,000 visas are granted each year.

Large companies like Microsoft, Google and Facebook try to get them.

Cheaper labor is a big attraction for companies. Some businesses found they could replace American tech workers with foreigners. The H-1B program was the way to do it. They would work with consulting firms in India. Soon the flow of H-1B workers would go to companies that used the program to save money.

Disney is a good example. It asked its workers to train the new foreign workers. Employees thought the company was getting bigger. Instead, the American workers got fired.

This is an abuse of the program. It was meant to help people with skills fill seats in the U.S. Those seats were supposed to be empty.

Is it good business for companies to try to lower costs? That is what companies do.

The consulting firms employ many of the H-1B workers. In this way, Disney can say they do not employ them.

It is a clear misuse of the H-1B program. There is a great public outcry about what Disney is doing. Many people think U.S. businesses and the government are in on it.

This practice hurts immigration reform. Opponents will say this is another way our borders are not secure.
