New Mexico Republican Governor Susana Martinez wants to end the program. She says the license system is subject to fraud. The state has charged people with creating fraudulent documents for foreign nationals from Poland, China, Mexico and other countries.
A review of license information shows dozens of addresses being used over and over again by immigrants. It suggests people are abusing the system.
According to the governor, people are coming from all over the world to get New Mexico driver’s licenses.
Immigrant advocates say the fraud is limited. Democrats say the flaws in the system should be corrected. People driving without registration or insurance put families at risk.
In New Mexico, licenses are given to people without a Social Security number. Applicants are not asked about their immigration status.
