A new study shows that children who are overweight by they time they go to kindergarten (five years of age) will likely be heavy for the rest of their lives. If the child is still overweight or obese at 11 years of age, there is a very good chance the child will be heavy as an adult.
Genetics play a big role. Parents are often the cause and solution. However, overweight parents can do things to change the weight of their youngsters. Other studies show that the food eaten at home is even more important than food eaten at school or at fast food places
Another study said that overweight toddlers should spend less time in front of TVs and computer games. The more these children exercise, the better off they will be. In this way the affect of overweight parents having overweight children can be reduced.
Experts say that nutrition programs that target all children miss children with real weight problems. These children need special attention.
The good news is that taking off a few pounds is easier for children. Taking off 20 pounds is much harder for adults. So the time to do it is early – before kindergarten.
