Do not Drink Milk at Night, Drink ‘Night Milk’

December 10, 2015
Plain English Version

cows 1Milk is mostly water. It also includes chemicals that act as a sleeping aid. Researchers found that the chemicals had a greater impact if the cow has been milked at night.

Drinking night milk works on mice. It has not been tested on people. Scientists think it will work. The reason? The milk from cows milked at night contains a lot of tryptophan. Tryptophan is a sleep-inducing compound. It also contains more of the hormone sleep aid melatonin.

Researchers gave lab mice doses of dried milk powder made from cow’s milk. It was collected during the day or night and mixed with distilled water. The night milk contained more tryptophan and much more melatonin than the day milk.

Compared with day milk, night milk decreased physical activity, balance and anxiety. It increased sleep time. In other words, it helped people sleep better.

One source of night milk is HiPP Organic Good Night Milk. It is recommended for youngsters aged six months to three years. There is also a German product called ‘nachtmilch Kristalle.’

Perhaps further study will result in more products.
