The Intel Company sponsors a Science Talent Search Competition. In 2011, seventy percent of the finalists are the children of immigrants.
Of the 40 finalists, 16 had parents born in China, 10 from India, and one each from Korea and Iran. The remaining twelve came from American-born parents.
Still, a study showed the earnings of immigrant and minority graduates with engineering degrees are lower than whites:
- Whites earn $80,000
- Asians earn $72,000
- African-Americans earn $60,000
- Hispanics earn $56,000
However, Asians earn more than whites in the fields of health, law and public policy; psychology and social work; and biology and life sciences.
The study said immigrants make important contributions. Future debate should recognize their value.
